“Oh the thinks you can think when you think about Seuss!”

As Marquee gears up for Seussical, one of our camp shows this summer, we want to share why this show is so special and exciting!

1. The characters and the lessons they teach us

The Cat in the Hat

The enthusiastic care-free lifestyle of The Cat can get him in trouble sometimes, but overall he teaches us to let our imaginations soar and follow our heart’s desires. The Cat learns a lesson throughout the show too. He discovers that sometimes you have to make choices that aren’t always fun in order to help others. But fun is still important!

Horton the Elephant

Horton’s caring nature and the kindness that he shows to JoJo and the rest of the Whos show us the true meaning of friendship and the value of being loyal. Horton’s determination to save the Whos, despite others making him feel small, is an incredible display of strength. He teaches us to persevere when we believe in something strongly and follow our instincts.

JoJo

Just like The Cat, JoJo’s imagination takes him to strange and incredible places. His innocent sense of wonder and hope is so refreshing, and it allows us to believe that anything is possible. Our thinks can fly us to the stars!

Gertrude McFuzz

Throughout the show, Gertrude struggles to love herself the way she is and will do anything to impress Horton in order to get his attention. Ultimately, Gertrude recognizes that she is kind and faithful and embraces all of the amazing qualities she possesses. The journey that Gertrude has reminds us to love ourselves for who we are!

Sour Kangaroo

The Sour Kangaroo and the rest of the Jungle of Nool accuse Horton of hearing things; they don’t believe his concerns about the Whos. They make him feel alone and excluded. From this, we learn that it is never okay to make someone feel this way for any reason. It is important to always be kind to others and lift them up rather than bring them down.

2. The music and costumes

The catchy, sensational songs and the bright, colourful costumes allow us to dive headfirst into the world of Dr. Seuss. From the hunches, to Whoville, to the Jungle of Nool, the music and costumes make us feel like we are being transported to these worlds. Our imaginations are able to soar right along with JoJo!

3. The message

“A person’s a person no matter how small” is the message at the heart of this show and a lesson that everyone needs a reminder of now and then. No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you look like, everyone deserves to be treated equally with love and respect. Seussical does a wonderful job of helping us understand that and allowing us to grow alongside the characters. No one should feel alone in the universe!

It’s not too late to sign up for camp – join us on this delightful ride and have a Seusstastic summer!
